Understanding Family Visas

Family visas are a type of immigration visa that allows you to bring
your family members to the United States to live permanently. There are
several different types of family visas, each with its own eligibility

Immediate relatives: Immediate relatives are
spouses, unmarried children under the age of 21, and parents of U.S.
citizens. Immediate relatives are eligible to apply for a family visa
without waiting in line.

Family preference: Family preference visas are for
other family members of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.
There are four family preference categories, each with its own waiting

First preference. Spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21 of lawful permanent residents.
Second preference. Unmarried sons and daughters of U.S. citizens over the age of 21.
Third preference. Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens and their spouses and children.
Fourth preference. Unmarried siblings of U.S. citizens.

It’s essential to remember that while Immediate Relative Visas don’t
have annual caps, Family Preference Visas do. This can result in more
extended waiting periods for certain categories, depending on the demand
and the country of origin of the beneficiary.

Requirements for Family Visas
Navigating the Family Visa landscape requires understanding specific prerequisites:

Proof of Relationship: Applicants must provide conclusive evidence of their relationship with the U.S. sponsor, like birth or marriage certificates.

Financial Stability: The sponsoring U.S. citizen must demonstrate financial capability to support the incoming family member(s).

Affidavit of Support: A legally binding document from the sponsor guaranteeing financial support to the immigrant, ensuring they won’t rely on public funds.

Medical Examination: The foreign family member must undergo a medical examination and be vaccinated, ensuring they don’t pose a health risk.

Clean Criminal Record: The applicant shouldn’t have significant criminal records or prior immigration violations.

Time Matters!
Time plays a critical role in the family visa application process, and here’s why:

  • The waiting time for a family visa can be long.
